Assessing The Right Type of Child Care for Your Child

Childcare is an important milestone and as such, it’s crucial you choose the best option at this critical development stage of their life. There are multiple options available to you, such as:

  • A reputed day care center
  • A family day care
  • In-home caregiving (such as a nanny)

The type you choose should be determined by your child’s personality and what they are comfortable with. As new parents, it can be challenging to try and make this decision without any help. So, to help you along, here are a few tips to keep in mind when choosing your child care type.

   1. Identify your child’s strengths and weaknesses

Children have their own unique personalities. Some are extremely outgoing right from when they are very young while others are shy and quiet. Each type of child care provides an opportunity for your child to hone the skills that they will require when they grow older.

For example, a shy child may find it difficult to make friends, especially if they are sheltered at home. While a day care centre may be tough for them at first, good caregivers will ensure that they learn to communicate and make friends with their peers.

   2. Identify the type of environment surrounding the child care centre

Your child needs to feel safe, comfortable, and accepted inside the child care centre to actually see positive changes. Children can be highly susceptible to what goes on around them, so if the learning environment is bad, it can have a negative or debilitating effect on their mental well-being.

For this reason, you should pop by the care centre before enrolling your child and also talk in length to the caregivers. This will give you an idea about the environment and allows you to assess if your child will fit into it.

   3. Identify if the caregiver is actually passionate about teaching children

Credentials on paper are not as important as how caregivers treat children, especially young kids. They may look great on paper, but if they cannot handle your child well, the whole experience is going to be a negative one for your child.

Your caregiver should have a naturally generous and nurturing attitude towards children. When you meet a caregiver and your gut instinct tells you that they may not be the right one (trust that mama-bear intuition!), you’re probably better off choosing another caregiver for your child.

   4. Identify the curriculum and daily activities

Everyday routines can vary greatly between child care centres and even caregivers. Some put greater emphasis on outdoor activities and group exercises while others prefer to stay indoors and work on classroom activities.

Both of these approaches are fine, but you have to consider which would be best for your child. You need to take into account their usual behaviour, attitude, and parenting style you have been using so far. If they all match with what the caregivers are going to be teaching them, then it just might be the right fit.

Child-rearing and everything that comes along with it is a tedious but fulfilling job. You are going to be faced with a lot of similar decisions you have to make for your child in the future. Just remember to keep your child’s unique personality in mind when making these decisions.

Even when it comes to child care, there are many options available in Australia to choose from, such as those in Brookvale, NSW. You may not be able to make a decision immediately, but with careful consideration you will be sure to make the best choice for your child!
